On Twitter, Dr. Irito Akiisa ((Irito Akiisa @ Psychiatry (@pppsychiatryyy) / Twitter. Twitter. Accessed March 11, 2021. https://twitter.com/pppsychiatryyy)) introduced books useful for senior psychiatry residency, so I compiled them here along with Amazon links.

Now that the end of my senior psychiatry residency is in sight, I'm using the predictable hashtag #精神科後期研修書籍 [Senior Psychiatry Residency Books]. I haven't listed any books I was involved in, so I have no COI. Though I wouldn't say no to promotional fees lol.
Starting with general resources. I'll add topic-specific ones if I feel like it.

Apologizing in advance: sorry for the long thread!

Later, other psychiatrists also shared their book recommendations. Please see the article below as well.

General psychiatry

"Seishin Shinryō Purachina Manyuaru" [Psychiatric Practice Platinum Manual] by Asaki Matsuzaki @Psycho_Note
You cannot talk about psychiatric practice without this knowledge. In a sense, it is a pure block of standard knowledge. It's the one book whose approach I want to use when explaining things to junior residents and allied health staff. #精神科後期研修書籍

Seishin Shinryō Purachina Manyuaru [Psychiatric Practice Platinum Manual], 2nd ed.

"Seishinka ni okeru Yoshin, Shoshin, Shoki Chiryō" [Preliminary Examination, Initial Consultation, and Early Treatment in Psychiatry] by Yomishi Kasahara
This goes without saying as a classic. If you cover the items in this book along with the 30-minute interview items in the Pocket Guide to the DSM-5 Diagnostic Exam (the white book), I think you will gather the minimum necessary information. #精神科後期研修書籍

Symptomatology and psychopathology

"Seishin Shōkōgaku" [Psychiatric Symptomatology] by Hidebumi Hamada
I use this like a dictionary of psychopathology. Wanting to use accurate terminology as early as possible, I consulted it extensively. #精神科後期研修書籍

Psychopharmacology

"Kaplan Seishinka Yakubutsu Handobukku" [Kaplan & Sadock's Pocket Handbook of Psychiatric Drug Treatment]
The 5th edition is the latest. I use this and the "Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines" to grasp the basics of pharmacotherapy, and look things up in "Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology" as needed. #精神科後期研修書籍

EEG interpretation

"Nōha Handoku Step by Step Nyūmonhen" [Step-by-Step EEG Interpretation: Introductory Volume]
I consider this the classic text for reading EEGs. Carrying around this volume, the Case Studies volume, and "Ayamariyasui Nōha Ijō" [Easily Misinterpreted Abnormal EEGs] while asking attending physicians to check my readings really trained my eye (though it might have been a nuisance for the attendings!). #精神科後期研修医書籍

Documentation and forms manuals

"Seishinka Shinryō ni Hitsuyō na Shoshiki Manyuaru" [Manual of Forms Required for Psychiatric Practice]
A special issue of the journal Rinshō Seishin Igaku [Japanese Journal of Clinical Psychiatry]. It covers almost everything about how to fill out the paperwork required in psychiatric practice. You need this. #精神科後期研修医書籍

Reference guides

I own the "DSM-5 Guidebook" (the thick one), the "ICD-10 Psychiatric Diagnosis Guidebook," and "Kaplan & Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry," but if your department office or hospital already has copies, you probably don't need to buy them yourself. #精神科後期研修医書籍

Psychotherapy and therapeutic structure

"Shijiteki Seishin Ryōhō Nyūmon" [Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy] by Arnold Winston
I think this provides a relatively compact summary of what supportive psychotherapy is and what techniques it involves. #精神科後期研修医書籍

— Irito Akiisa @ Psychiatry (@pppsychiatryyy) March 10, 2021

Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy (Shijiteki Seishin Ryōhō Nyūmon)

((Arnold Winston, Richard N. Rosenthal, Henry Pinsker. Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy [Shijiteki Seishin Ryōhō Nyūmon]. Seiwa Shoten; 2009. https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4791107209/))

"Practical Theory of Therapeutic Structure for Clinicians" by Kazuhiko Kurihara
Mentioning therapeutic structure inevitably brings psychoanalytic concepts to mind, but practicing with an awareness of therapeutic structure makes a significant difference in both outpatient and inpatient settings compared to practicing without it. I also recommend Dr. Okano's "Therapeutic Flexible Structure." #PsychiatrySeniorResidentBooks

Medical welfare

"Comprehensive Guidebook on Medical Welfare"
This book shows how many social resources exist that doctors don't know about. Leaving everything to psychiatric social workers (PSWs) is fine, but how seriously they take your request might differ depending on whether you ask with some basic knowledge versus complete ignorance. I also recommend it for its reasonable price given the volume. #PsychiatrySeniorResidentBooks

Guidelines (Psychiatric / Non-psychiatric)

"Internal Medicine Flowchart for Hospitalists" by Katsushige Takagishi @EX08225296
As a rule, I handle internal medicine issues on the ward according to this book and various clinical guidelines. The author's blog is also very informative. #PsychiatrySeniorResidentBooks

Speaking of guidelines, it is a good idea to look through the "Guideline for Pharmacological Therapy of Schizophrenia," "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Epilepsy," "Practice Guideline for Dementia," and the various guidelines published by the Japanese Society of Mood Disorders. Otherwise, your patients might end up knowing more about standard treatments than you do. #PsychiatrySeniorResidentBooks

Occupational physicians

"Guidance for Supporting the Return to Work of Workers on Leave Due to Mental Health Issues" https://t.co/SYUNxn5RYA
Although not a book, this helps you grasp the flow of medical leave and return to work. You might suddenly be asked to meet with a patient's workplace supervisor right after taking over their case, so keep a copy on hand. #PsychiatrySeniorResidentBooks
